WHAT YOU WILL SEE - "The Outback's Tunnel of Time"

Visitors to the "The Outback's Tunnel of Time" will discover and experience the origins of the Outback. Relive the Aboriginal stories, tales of pioneer explorers and settlers - and learn what the vast and varied land means to the people who live and work there today.

You can enter the "Tunnel of Time" and step back 15 million years to the Green Time where the dinosaurs roamed the land and discover how the Flinders Ranges and the Outback of South Australia evolved. Unlock the secrets of the owners of the land for yourself, as the Aboriginal stories are revealed in sound, pictures and film. Follow Akurra, the Rainbow Serpent, back to the time when animals spoke and the spirits roamed the land.

Join the early explorers, Eyre, Sturt, Giles and Stuart on their brave treks into the unknown. See how camels, ships, bikes, horses and cattle opened up this vast land. Learn of the tales of the early settlers, of bullockies and wheat, drought and disasters to the coming of the telegraph, trains, mining, and hear a typical classroom lesson from decades ago on the pedal radio, the School of the Air.

See the Oscar-winning film "back of Beyond" about the Birdsville Mail Run. Try using the old telegraph, the morse code, listen to the Party Line conversations on the old telephone switch board and become the Flying doctor treating the people of the Outback. Tour the Moomba gas plant; hear rock being blasted and other underground sounds in the world-famous Olympic Dam Mine at Roxby Downs. You can't go underground at Roxby but you can at the Wadlata Outback Centre. A spot light on nature display introduces you to the delicate but hardy plant and wildlife of the region. Find out what happens to them in time of drought and when it rains again.

If you do not have time to finish your journey, ask the friendly staff for a “Pass Out” to return free of charge. (Conditions apply)

Copies of our School Work Sheets are available upon request, to enable schools to plan their visit.
